The Secret of Ella and Micha by Jessica Sorensen

A rule-breaker with a fiery attitude, Ella always wore her heart on her sleeve. Then she left everything behind to go to college, where she transformed into someone who follows the rules, keeps everything together, and hides all her problems. Now it's summer break and she has nowhere else to go but home. But once there, Ella fears that everything she's worked so hard to bury might resurface-especially with Micha living right next door. Smart, sexy, and confident, Micha can get under Ella's skin like no one else. He knows everything about her, including her darkest secrets. If he tries to tempt the old Ella to return, he will be impossible to resist. But what Ella doesn't realize is that when she left, she took a piece of Micha's heart with her. Now he's determined to win back the girl he lost, no matter what it takes.

He knows everything about her, including her darkest secrets. If he tries to tempt the old Ella to return, he will be impossible to resist. But what Ella doesn’t realize is that when she left, she took a piece of Micha’s heart with her. Now he’s determined to win back the girl he lost, no matter what it takes.

“He knows what I’m about to say—he always does. He is my best friend, my soul mate. In a perfect world, full of roses and sunshine   we’d be together, but this world is full of broken homes, drunken fathers, and mothers who give up easily.”

Ella is afraid of her feelings for Micha, she loves him but she’s terrified Micha will see how broken she is inside if she lets them “go there” and she’ll lose him.   She tries to bury her feelings by keeping him at arm’s length but the more she’s around him, the more she wants him and the harder it is to fight it.  But she doesn’t come off as wishy-washy or like she’s leading him on.  She’s working through her feelings and slowly giving him pieces of herself.  She’s not pushing him away; she’s taking baby steps towards him.

“Then I swig my beer back and bury my pain, along with Ella. She’s the only girl that’s ever been able to get me this upset. The only girl that’s never wanted me.”

Micha has been in love with Ella since he was sixteen years old and he gets Ella like nobody else does.  He knows what she’s thinking.  He knows when to push    her and when to pull back.  He’ll call her on her crap and give her a reality check when needed.  He’ll fight with her and for her.  He wants her to lean on him when life gets rough.  He wants her to run to him instead of away from him when she’s overwhelmed.  He knows she loves him but he lets her figure it out in her own time.  His life is not the same without Ella in it and he pines for her without turning into a love sick sap.

I really loved this book.  It’s told from alternating POVs so both character’s voices are heard which gives the reader a better insight to both of them.  The characters, main and supporting, are well-written and they each have a distinct personality.  The conversations they have are realistic and natural.  I was able to connect with them and I understood their motivation throughout the whole book.  The story flowed very well and it was paced perfectly.  This book is about a broken girl finding her way and the boy who loves her enough to let her get there in her own time.  It’s about accepting life can be messy and it isn’t always perfect but when you allow yourself to love and be loved you can get through anything life throws at you.

Would I read this book again? YES
