Dark YA Paranormal Romance
Sapphire Star Publishing
Jake thought being demon meant a shredded humanity, stripped of all human emotion. Chaos and self-preservation dominates a demon’s instincts. But Jake feels every ounce of pain and despair around him.
And it’s driving him deeper into Hell.
Gabby’s choice to save him last summer left a fissure in Hell’s gate that released a malevolent evil. When Jake’s given a mission by the demons to shadow a human girl who may know the whereabouts of an ethereal weapon, he doesn’t expect to see Gabby. But Fate has her own agenda.
When Jake and Gabby are thrown together on a camping trip with a group of delinquent teens, Jake begins to grapple with the haunting choices he made in the past. When the evil finds them, the group begins to battle for their lives, alliances are made, and truths revealed.
As the evil begins to influence Jake, he questions his link to the demons, his purpose, and his love for Gabby.
But the answers to those questions are only found in Hell. And it may cost him his soul.
Thanks for hosting me, Gabi!
Gabi— Thank you for doing this interview, Elizabeth. In The Second Shadow the apocalypse is coming, while that clock ticks, so does Jake’s. Tell us about that.
I always knew this book was going to focus more on Jake’s character and his descent into hell. In the first book Jake went from being the quirky, nice guy to…something much darker. In book 2 Jake begins to battle with the consequence of the choices he made in book 1 and it influences his decisions in book 2. An evil entity is released and spreading death in its wake and we learn that Jake is linked with that destruction. I don’t want to give away any spoilers.
Gabi– Gabby is The Second Sign, the key to opening the portal to hell and the start of the apocalypse. She is dealing with the loss of Jake, his sister’s blood on her hands, and figuring out how to stop the end of the world. Heavy stuff. How difficult was it, given the subject manner, to keep this novel in a YA voice?
I’m surrounded by teens every day, at home and at work. I draw out my characters from those interactions. Gabby and Jake are no different than the kids they’re trying to save. They’re going through “normal” teen emotions of teen love, parental issues, and making friends. Their love could end the world, their parents are not human, and their friends are dying, but…
Gabi– We didn’t see much of Pat, a fallen angel, in The Second Sign, or we didn’t get to know him like we did in this novel. What made you decide to develop this character? Also, thank you.
It’s good that you bring up Pat. I fell in love with Pat in book one. I always pictured him as Jake’s fate had Jake made the decisions Pat did. Pat is…a contradiction. I actually cut out Pat’s origins in book 2 because my author brain started butting in and I had to come to grips that this series is about Jake and Gabby. But Pat is still lurking in the backdrop with endless possibilities for his character growth.
Gabi– Blackhawks Rule!! Not a question.
Yay! I’m totally okay with getting on the bandwagon. =)
Gabi– Who are your favorite authors and who do you most often read?
Stephen King and Dean Koontz are golden for me. I also like Julie Kagawa’s Blood Eden series. I saw an interview with Veronica Roth that prompted me to buy her book. She seems awesome. On the adult side I’ve read lots of JR Ward, Sherrilyn Kenyon. In fantasy I always look for RA Salvatore books. Love the sword action in his books. I’m all over the place. Give me great characters, great plot, and action and I’m in. =)
Gabi– What else are you working on right now, Elizabeth?
I actually have a contract for an adult romance-fantasy book. Yay! I’m also working on a YA thriller.
*throws confetti* A romance-fantasy??!! That’s fantastic! Thank you for stopping by, Liz!
Bred to believe in the war between angels and demons, Gabby has come to the conclusion that love is responsible for war, jealousy, and all the other deadly sins she can think of. So when she’s exiled to the middle of nowhere for getting kicked out of her fifth school for fighting, she doesn’t expect to meet Jake. Much less fall in love. But Jake is quickly drawn to the eerie beauty of her violet eyes while Gabby is unsettled by their undeniable connection.
When a demon guardian comes to collect her soul, she refuses to give it up. She’s not a demon. She can’t be. Her father and twin brother are angels. The demon gives Gabby twenty-four hours to decide her allegiance, and then starts killing her short list of friends, leaving a message behind: She is the Second Sign.
As Gabby and Jake begin to unravel the mystery behind the Second Sign, she learns Jake may be the key to saving her soul. But it means a sacrifice has to be made that will change their lives forever.
