Retro Sci-Fi Movie, Max Neptune and the Menacing Squid; I’m a Fan

Growing up my favorite movie was Flash Gordon. I can’t say it out load without adding, “Flash! Ah haaaa…”

Other favorites included Star Wars, Dune, Alien, and Star Trek.

Don’t get me wrong here, I had a Cabbage Patch doll and other girly things. But when I got home from school I played Life Force (wicked Japanese Nintendo game. Later I got Salamander 2).

I’m also big into comics. So is my six year old son.

So when I bought this retro sci-fi movie, Max Neptune and the Menacing Squid, when it came out– I loved it! My son went crazy over it. At the time he was just getting over his Buzz Lightyear obsession. Which was great because I was able to take some of his Buzz gear, some Star Wars gear, and a few things I made and Boom! I had a Max Neptune knock-off costume for him.

Scene by scene my son plays out this entire movie. I am the evil Dr. Agotch with my dollar store, plastic kaleidoscope eye. But hey, it works and I’ve got the sinister laugh down. 😉

Every time I watch it I laugh at certain parts. This upsets my son because he takes it so damn seriously. And how can I possibly laugh when Max is squaring off with a Clint Eastwood-ish bug alien?

“Earth has found itself in the crosshairs of a distant race of marauding space aliens!

With the peace and security of the entire universe teetering on the edge of chaos, the United Planets rush their greatest leaders to an emergency summit on the Earth’s Moon. They are our last great hope for intergalactic peace.

When the evil Dr. Agotch unleashes his massive mechanical space squid upon the transport carrying those leaders, an innocent city, and the Atomic Space Patrol, could this be the end?

With a galaxy in danger, a city in peril, and a damsel in distress… There is only one man who can save the day…
